THE MARKET GARDEN

Tuinderij het Lichtveen is a small-scale market garden in Bennekom, the Netherlands. It is run following the principles of agroecology and regenerative agriculture. This means focusing on building the health of the soil and wider farm ecosystem and providing food through short supply-chains to our local community.

We grow on land rented from organic dairy farm Boerderij de Hooilanden. Here we are transforming a plot of former pasture into a productive and sustainable no-dig market garden, producing a wide range of healthy and nutritious vegetables, herbs and berries.

YOUR DIET MAKES A DIFFERENCE!

We are now more conscious than ever about our human impact on the planet, yet trying to do something about it in our daily lives can be overwhelming. We believe that good food lies at the heart of the solution! Good in terms of taste and freshness, of course, but also in terms of the way it is produced: sustainably, with the health of the local environment and communities in mind.

We want to make the step to becoming a sustainable consumer and citizen a simple one for you! Since May 2022, you can find our fresh seasonal produce on the Wageningen market as well as in local shops, restaurants and the meals of local caterers.

KLARA VAN MIERLO

Klara: Hi! I’m Klara, originally from Belgium, and I moved to Wageningen for my studies in food and agriculture. I’ve always been interested in the environmental impact of food production and processing, which I explored in depth during my master’s thesis and PhD research.

At the same time, I’m drawn to the practical side of food production and preparation. That’s why I also did a cooking training and worked as a chef after completing my PhD. It’s very rewarding to put my theoretical knowledge into practice!

Since January 2026, I’ve joined Lichtveen as a co-owner. I really like contributing to sustainable vegetable production, while also expanding the the farm’s culinary experiences. Check out our cooking workshops and farm dinners for more information on this!

CHRIS CHANCELLOR

Chris: "I'm a British-Indonesian, WUR graduate, and passionate about all things food: where it comes from, how it tastes & how it can support livelihoods & local economies.

My previous academic focus on land & human rights, poverty & inequality kept leading me back to the same place: our broken industrial food system. Being a food producer gives me the opportunity to contribute to building a truly just & sustainable alternative, quite literally, from the ground up. So that's what I decided to do!

In 2019 I set up Pluktuin Sayuran, an agroecological self-harvest market garden on the Wageningse Eng. After 3 years of running this part-time, I decided it was the time to use the skills and experience gained and take it to the next step, and so here we are!"
